Progressive muscle relaxation is a systematic technique for achieving a deep state of self-relaxation. Longterm effects of regular practice of progressive muscle relaxation lead to:

  • decrease in general anxiety
  • decreased possibility for skeletal-muscular system to become rigid and sore
  • improved concentration
  • increased spontaneity and creativity
  • improved deep sleep

Background

Progressive muscle relaxation was developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobson (1888-1983) who discovered that a muscle could be self-relaxed, first by contraction for a few seconds and then by release through certain breathing technique.
